Digital Marketing is a necessity for many companies today but also a missed opportunity for others. If you are among the latter, then it may be right time to start a test campaign.
We would like to dispel 4 common myths, related to digital marketing that we encounter while talking to small businesses. If you know more, kindly mention them in comments.
1) Digital Marketing is for Online Companies only.
Many Offline companies think that Digital marketing is just another communication channel to reach out to their users. But, in the digital era, it is becoming the only channel to reach out to many users. For e.g. most users now spend their time on Facebook, YouTube, Sports websites, music websites and blogs. In metro cities, most working professionals are connected to the Internet almost at all times and Mobile is becoming the device of choice. For urban users the time spent on Internet is now far more than time spent watching TV. Now, even TV content is viewed through Hotstar, Ditto and other apps.
2) Digital Marketing requires big budgets.
Actually, TV or newspaper ad requires big budgets. One can set up and start a SEM (Search Engine Marketing) campaign on Google AdWords or a Paid Social campaign on Facebook Ads for a budget as low as Rs.100.
Moreover, Internet provides great opportunities for Brand to gain popularity among users through “Free” Marketing. There can be a number of ways for this, such as a video going viral on Facebook or YouTube, a Facebook Page having engaging posts, comments on Instagram pictures, presentations on SlideShare, etc. Most importantly, a regular traffic to website comes from Organic results (shown just below Paid results) on Search Engines. Even though being free, this traffic can be built over a period of time and requires strategic and creative efforts.
3) I can’t see my digital advertisement. It’s a waste.
The most important power of Digital Marketing is that all the activities can be tracked, right from the advertisement being shown to the user (Impressions), to the user Clicking on the ad and then visiting the website, to Video Views, Downloads, Leads and Online Sales.
If you can’t see your ad, maybe you are not the target audience of that ad or maybe the budgets are too less to target everyone including you. Any Cost incurred in Digital Marketing can always be linked directly with its impact. This allows for fair analysis of return on ad spends (ROAS). One just need to have fair expectations from the campaign in a competitive market and never hesitate to take professional help when required.
4) It’s too technical
For many business owners & executives, its difficult to understand the technical jargon of digital marketing. It’s much easier to run a TV or a newspaper ad. The technicalities don’t necessarily be mastered by every business. For a small business, it’s much useful to take expert help and try to get the best out of digital marketing. Then, it becomes much easier and highly profitable.
